Agave americana is a bold, architectural succulent with wide, blue-gray leaves edged in sharp teeth and tipped with a stiff terminal spine. It forms a massive rosette and eventually produces a dramatic flower spike, after which the main rosette dies but leaves behind offsets at the base. Tolerant of heat, drought, and poor soils, it is well-suited to large landscapes, slopes, and low-maintenance Mediterranean-style gardens.
