Platanus racemosa, also known as the California sycamore or Western sycamore, is a species of sycamore tree that is native to California and parts of the southwestern United States. It is a large tree that can reach heights of up to 100 feet and has a broad, spreading crown. The bark is light gray and exfoliates in large, irregularly shaped plates. The leaves are large, lobed, and have a glossy green upper surface. In the fall, the leaves turn yellow-brown before dropping. The tree produces large, round fruit clusters that are 1-2 inches in diameter. The California sycamore is a popular shade tree in landscaping, and it is also used for erosion control and in riparian habitats. It is hardy in USDA zones 7-11.
