Rhus lancea, also known as the African sumac, is a species of deciduous shrub or small tree that is native to Southern Africa. It is a hardy, drought-resistant species that is well adapted to dry conditions. It typically grows to a height of 20-30 feet. The leaves are glossy green, pinnately compound and are arranged alternately on the branches. The bark is smooth, gray to brown and exfoliates in a similar way to the Birch tree. This species is hardy in USDA zones 9 and above, and it is often used as an ornamental, for erosion control, and in xeriscaping.
